Finding Yourself in the Psalms

Psalm 129

A Psalm of Hope in Times of Testing

(Psalm 124)
" A song of ascents. Of David.
If the Lord had not been on our side—

let Israel say—

if the Lord had not been on our side when men attacked us,

they would have swallowed us alive;

the flood would have engulfed us, the

torrent would have swept over us, the raging waters would have swept us away.

Praise be to the Lord, who has not let us be torn by their teeth.

We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, the
Maker of heaven and earth."
(Psalm 129)
" A song of ascents.
They have greatly oppressed me from my youth—

let Israel say—

they have greatly oppressed me from my youth,

but they have not gained the victory over me.

Plowmen have plowed my back and made their furrows long.

But the Lord is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.

May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame. May they be like grass on the roof, which withers before it can grow; with it the reaper cannot fill his hands, nor the one who gathers fill his arms. May those who pass by not say, "The blessing of the Lord be upon you; we bless you in the name of the Lord.""
