Psalm 75

A Psalm For Those Who Doubt God’s Judgment

Background:

The Assyrian siege of Jerusalem (722 BC) Isa 37:9-13; 13-17; 2 Chron 32:8

Two lessons bound in this one Psalm”

1) God will judge the wicked

2) God will punish His disobedient children

You must study this Psalm by looking at the VOICES

I. Praise. 75:1 (the people are speaking to God)
A. From the PEOPLE
B. “Name” = His presence
II. Patience. 75:2-3 (GOD to the righteous)
A. “You say. . .”
B. 3 truths:
1. God will judge at the appointed time
2. God will judgment will be a righteous judgment
3. God is in control when everything else fails (75:3)
III. Pronouncement. 75:4-8 (GOD to the wicked)
A. To The ARROGANT: (75:4) Your boasting will not last forever
1. Nebuchadnezzar. Dan 4:28-30; 34-37
2. Day of the LORD. 1 Thessalonians 5:3 “While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape."
3. “Lift your horn. . .”
a. The horn of an ox or bull b. Strength
c. A horn meant something that was “a useable advantage for another”
B. Only GOD can lift us up.. 75:6-7
1. East, West, SOUTH mentioned. . . the NORTH is left. The ASSYRIANS
were coming from the NORTH. Only the LORD could save Jerusalem!
2. 1 Samuel 12:1 " 1)Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened to everything you said to me and have set a king over you."
3. Psalm 92:10 "10)You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me."
4. James 4:10 "10)Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up."
C. God will not forget judgement

“God’s delays should not lead the saints to despond, or sinners to presume. For

when the hour comes, judgment will come.” Scrogie.

IV. Promise. 75:9-10 (The Psalmist to GOD)
A. I will WORSHIP the LORD
B. I will WITHDRAW from the wicked
V. APPLICATION:
A. God will judge the wicked.
1. Deuteronomy 32:35 "35)It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.”"
2. Romans 12:19 "19)Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord."
B. God will discipline his children
1. Hebrews 12:5-6 "5)And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6)because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”
2. Jeremiah 7:1-11
3. FORGIVENESS? Yes. RESTORATION? Yes. ELIMINATION

of CONSEQUENCES? NO

4. “No one ever knowingly commits sin with the thought “I’m going to get caught.”
5. GOD’S Judgment is REAL. Hebrews 10:30-31 "30)For we know him

who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31)It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
