v. 11-12. Darkness cannot conceal me – this made David think about his conception. God knew me even before I was born.
1. Our individuality is known by God
2. Our humanity is established before our birth – we are created in God’s image
• what distinguishes people from animals?
• “knit together” Job 10:11
• Our life is known by God. Ps. 39:4-6; Matthew 6:27 (NIV) Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
3. Our life is fearfully and wonderfully made. 139:14
• Fearfully. “To revere” Jeremiah 10:7 (NIV) 7 Who should not revere you, O King of the nations?
This is your due. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.
• Wonderfully – deal differently, make a distinction, set apart. Exodus 11:7 (NIV) 7 But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any man or animal.’ Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.
• David is operating from an elementary understanding of the HUMAN BODY. Before ultrasound images of the child in the womb. Before DNA discovery, Before OPEN HEART surgery.
• He makes his statement on the basis of observation and experience, not science.
4. V. 15. Repeats the same pattern as v. 13.
• “When I was woven” A similar term. Exodus 26:36 (NIV) 36 “For the entrance to the tent make a curtain of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen—the work of an embroiderer.
